Go, my people, enter your rooms
and shut the doors behind you;
hide yourselves for a little while
until his wrath has passed by.

Chapter 1 – Come Out, Come Out, Were Ever You Are

Hard flick of her left hand delivered a thwack from the collapsible baton snapping into twenty one inches of cold steel, as she twisted the knob in her right hand, gently pushing the door wide open, and slipping into the back bedroom, were she was met with the stench of sweat and stale cigarette smoke, clinging to her flesh like an early morning fog. Scanning the room, she spotted a twin mattress tossed on the floor under a window with twisted sheets, crumpled jeans, a pair of sneakers at the foot of the bed. Inspecting the top of a make-shift night stand made from a card board box was an over flowing ash tray, an open pack of menthol cigarettes, spare change and a wallet with an expired driver’s license and three one dollar bills. Rena grabbed the cable dangling from her ear piece, activating a two-way radio, “Found his lair. He’s here, pantsless and bare footed.” The room was packed with discarded items that had not made it into the trash, like an old Atari game system, a treadmill, and Tanya’s brother, Cecil. Preparing herself for the worst, Rena Hawkins took a defensive stance, gripping the slap stick above her head, cocked, and ready to strike, jerking the closet door open to discover uniform shirts hanging above a pair of work boots, but no Cecil.
